Wannabe Michigander!

Look who we ran into in Ann Arbor! Kidding. Lisa and Ian were in town (not our town, a nice town by the lake!) for a friend's wedding and stayed a bit longer (Ian's parents live in Ann Arbor) and so they had time for breakfast. We met them at Angelo's for a filling and yummy brunch. We got to catch up and talked mostly about the wedding and their trip to the Sundance festival in Park City (ok, mostly Dave caught up since I just had dinner with them in SF a few weeks before). They were our first visitors. . . .it was funny to see people in a different element! I hope they are not our last visitors. ..but I wouldn't make any bets! I had to laugh at Lisa, the only one who had M-wear on. Total wannabe dudes. =)

Happy Birthday Auntie!

When I was home last month, we did my bday dinner at the new Burgermeister in Westlake (no burgers in East Lansing as I don't eat "meat of unknown origin"). I got to sit with the baby b/c it was my bday and so together we enjoyed a burger, fries, Dr. Pepper & some weird Italian cake. It's a good thing his mother is good-natured and let's me play with him like he's my favorite toy!

This is really just a post to show off my cute nephew . . .the little man is about 4 mos. here - and about 15 lbs. And, I'm his favorite auntie!

Happy Fat Tuesday!

It turns out that there are a lot of Polish people in Detroit (not that I've been to Detroit, I just read about them) and this time of year, they (and all the non-Polish people these days) celebrate "Paczki Day" when they make and eat the traditional "paczki" a traditional Polish bakery treat. The story goes that historically, the Polish would try to use up all the fat & eggs that they would not be eating during Lent - and so created the paczki (pronounced poonch-key), which is basically what I would call a jelly doughnut. I think it's too cold to have an actual Mardi Gras celebration here, so they compromise and eat fatty foods indoors! Here in East Lansing, a couple of stores carry them and we've tried a bunch of different flavors. Custard-filled is my favorite - but really, at the end of the day, I'd take a krispy kreme plain glazed over one these things.

I was excited to try them because I had read so much about them, but in the end, like many things Michigan (except Dave, of course!), not worth the excitement! Photos of the "process".
P.S. It's 40 degrees today, sun is out and I can hear kids playing outside. . . Spring cannot be that far off!
